Stage 5 — Breaking the Silence

Silence often protects the abuser rather than the survivor.
Fear, shame, and confusion can keep survivors silent for years.
Many survivors remain silent because they:
feel ashamed
believe the abuse was their fault
fear punishment
were threatened by the abuser
worry they will not be believed
Breaking the silence can be terrifying.
However, choosing a safe and trustworthy person to confide in can be a powerful step in healing.
Listening to someone’s story with respect and compassion is an honor.
When survivors are believed, the healing process can begin in a deeper way.
