Stage 6 — Understanding It Was Not Your Fault

A central theme is helping survivors understand that the abuse was never their fault. This is why our organization is called Not Guilty, because it is never the victim's fault.
Children often blame themselves for abuse.
Even as adults, survivors may continue carrying feelings of guilt and shame.
Some survivors believe they should have stopped the abuse.
Others feel confused because they may have experienced physical pleasure during the abuse.
But the responsibility for abuse always lies with the abuser.
Overcoming shame often involves:
talking openly about the abuse
connecting with other survivors
practicing self-compassion
nurturing the child within
Recognizing that the abuse was not your fault can be deeply freeing.
