Stage 1 — The Decision to Heal

One of the first steps in the healing journey is the decision to heal.
This idea is discussed in The Courage to Heal by Ellen Bass and Laura Davis, which describes healing from abuse as a gradual process rather than a quick solution.
For many survivors, the decision to heal begins quietly. It may come as the realization that the pain of silence has become too heavy to carry alone.
Deciding to heal means recognizing that what happened matters and that recovery is possible.
However, healing does not happen overnight.
It takes time, patience, and support.
Many survivors initially believe they must face everything alone. But healing rarely happens in isolation.
Breaking the silence and reaching out for support is often a crucial step toward recovery.
Support might come from:
trusted friends or family
therapists or counselors
survivor support groups
spiritual leaders
Choosing to heal is an act of courage. It is the first step toward reclaiming one’s life.
