Stage 2 — The Emergency Stage

The authors of The Courage to Heal, Ellen Bass and Laura Davis, describe an intense period in healing that many survivors experience, sometimes referred to as the emergency stage.

During this stage, thoughts about the abuse may dominate the survivor’s mind. Memories, emotions, and fears can feel overwhelming.

Some survivors experience:

  • nightmares

  • panic attacks

  • flashbacks

  • intense stress

  • emotional crises

Life may feel chaotic or unstable.

At times, the emotional pain may feel so overwhelming that survivors may even think about ending their lives. During these moments, it is extremely important to remember that this stage will pass.

Practical coping tools can help survivors get through this period.

For example, having a written list of steps to follow during a panic attack can be helpful:

  1. Slow your breathing

  2. Remind yourself you are safe now

  3. Call a trusted person

  4. Drink water or step outside

  5. Focus on something grounding in your surroundings

With time, support, and patience, the intensity of this stage gradually decreases.
